Mercy Steps Program

About Us

Meet Our Founder

Mercy

The Mercy Steps Program is a non-profit organization founded in 2009 by Mercy C. Mbitau. Born and raised in Kenya, Mercy developed an early awareness of suffering and pain, the experiences that deeply shaped her sense of compassion and responsibility to act. The impact of cancer among those around her, people she grew up with, and others she knew very well played a big role in the founding of this organisation.

From a young age, she was moved by the challenges faced by the vulnerable, especially the elderly, and this growing awareness became the foundation of her lifelong commitment to service. What began as a small, family-led initiative to support cancer patients in her home village has since grown into a broader program reaching children and women across Kenya.

Today, the organization is committed to uplifting children through the MSP Tech for Kids initiative. Msp also raises cancer awareness, promoting early detection through educational workshops and providing essential support to women and families affected by cancer nationwide.

“Life begins with service. Life is service. Life ends with service. Service, no matter how small, turns compassion into action to build pathways where none existed before.”  Mercy Mbitau

Our Values

Building better lives.

At Mercy Steps Program, our work is guided by respect, collaboration, and trust. These values shape how we serve, how we work together as a team, with our associates, and how we connect with the communities we support.

Care

Our care begins with compassion, for those affected by cancer and for those who walk that journey alongside them. We strive to create a culture where no one feels alone, and no one is left behind.
We care deeply for our staff and our compassionate volunteers. When we support one another, we are better able to serve those who need us most.
To us, caring for others is not just what we do, it is what gives our work purpose and meaning.

Integrity

We believe in treating everyone we serve, and one another, with empathy, sensitivity, and honesty. Trust is at the heart of everything we do, and we are committed to protecting the dignity and confidentiality of those who place their trust in us.
We value learning, growth, and the sharing of knowledge, knowing that this strengthens both our work and our community. We recognize new supporters and nurture lasting relationships, so that together, we can continue to grow and serve with purpose.

What We Do

Children’s Initiative

We provide practical, ongoing support to children from vulnerable backgrounds, helping them access quality education and build a stronger future.

We work closely with schools and guardians to identify children in need and respond with targeted support. Our programs focus on removing barriers to education by providing essential resources, including school fees, uniforms, learning materials, and access to technology through initiatives like MSP Tech for Kids.

Beyond material support, we create opportunities for growth through mentorship, educational guidance, and community engagement. Our approach is long-term and holistic, ensuring that children are supported not only in their education but also in their personal development; empowering them to become confident, responsible adults and future leaders.

Women’s Initiative

We support women through health awareness, education, and empowerment programs that improve their well-being and strengthen their role within the community.

We work with local and international partners to reach women in underserved communities, particularly those affected by breast cancer and other health challenges. Our initiatives focus on raising awareness, promoting early detection, and providing access to essential information through workshops and community health information days.

In addition, we support women through outreach and independent programs, including capacity-building initiatives that foster independence and resilience. Our approach is practical and sustainable, ensuring that women are equipped with the knowledge, support, and opportunities they need to lead healthier, more empowered lives.
